		<description>Interesting premise. I always felt that HAL was operating from vanity and competitiveness.  He knew he was smarter than them, yet he had to serve them.  He knew they were on a special mission, yet he was going to play a role as nothing much more than ship&#039;s hardware and software. 

But he was programmed with human emotions.  So he felt he should be the one to reach Jupiter Space and the worlds beyond.  If he had been successful, it would have been HAL floating in the bubble/womb of the final shot. Not human, but machine intelligence would have been selected for the next step in evolution.</description>
